Kwabs - Last Stand (prod. by SOHN)

Astonishingly good soul singer and fan of open-neck shirts Kwabs first popped onto the Dummy radar earlier this year with his dejected electronic ballad Spirit Fade. His is a voice that weighs heavily with its emotion and yet displays an effortless technique that travels over production flourishes like paper caught in the wind – it's seriously one of those "stop what you're doing and listen" kind of sounds, as we've said before – and so we couldn't think of any better producer for him to join forces with than vocal-loving 4AD signee SOHN

On Last Stand, SOHN's manipulation of Kwabs' voice into an aching tapestry of backing vocals, with an added coating of bass and the angry swell of synths, turns the whole track into a wonderfully intuitive soul song; it's one where the singer and track express the same pain, seeming to breathe in and out in tandem.

At the beginning of this year we made a snowy little film about SOHN and his imminent world domination; since then he's signed to 4AD as well as producing stunning singles like this and Banks's Waiting GameNow's as good a time as any to watch the film and get familiar.
