Mutya Keisha Siobhan - Lay Down In Swimming Pools

There was once a time when no one envisioned that Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy would ever work together again after the original Sugababes disbanded in a less-than-friendly way back in 2001, and the line-up of what was once a fresh and exciting girl group went on to evolve beyond all recognition. Not only has their reunion come to pass, though, but they’ve also been working with producer-of-the-moment and purveyor of dancefloor heartbreak Dev Hynes, AKA Blood Orange – and also, apparently, with Kendrick Lamar (sort of).

Hynes uploaded the track below – which features the girls crooning their own lyrics over Kendrick’s Swimming Pools (Drank) instrumental – to his Soundcloud this afternoon, with the explanation “Just finished recording new music with Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan and the girls felt like having a bit of fun at the end of the last session – enjoy!!” It’s good to hear them literally slotting themselves into the cultural climate of 2013, and yet still harmonising and ad-libbing with gusto like it’s 1999. It might not be a track on their new album – nor does it really show any trace of Blood Orange’s sad-pop magic – but it’ll still do something to the hairs on the back of your neck.
