Premiere: Majical Cloudz - What That Was (Digits Remix)

Toronto producer Digits drags the melodramatic Montreal duo into disco territory - and it works.

Beneath the often heavy-hearted subject matter and melodramatic melodies, there's a wry spark to Montreal duo Majical Cloudz – something I discovered in this interview with frontman Devon Welsh last year. Which makes me suspect that this wholly unexpected remix just might tickle them. After Welsh publically shared the a cappella for What That Was from the duo's 'Turns Turns Turns' EP, a precursor to Majical Cloudz' earthy and commanding album 'Impersonator'Toronto producer Digits took it upon himself to drag this warm tale of friendship into "Europop/disco" territory and the result – weirdly – works. It's something to do with the depth of Welsh's voice and the sparkly-eyed froth of the beat, not to mention the song's narrative about going out on Friday and coming home on Saturday. There's even something a touch Pointer Sisters, specifically their 1983 hit Jump (For My Love)about the perky synths, which could obviously only be a good thing.

Digits will release a new collection of songs and collaborations titled 'Shake Your Body Down Mixtape' in late August 2013. Collaborations will include a track with No Pain In Pop's Doomsquad and Caribou's Brad Weber.
