Listen to the sound of the space around Earth

NASA have provided us with the cosmic noises of Earth itself, which were, until now, previously unheard to the human ear.

With the use of the Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS if you want it to be slightly easier on the tongue), NASA have made the radio waves which exist within the Earth’s magnetosphere available for us all to hear.

Dubbed Earth’s ‘chorus’ due to its audible similarity to birds singing in the early morning hours, a sample of these waves has been embedded below: it’s a pretty, albeit brief snippet of what could potentially be the only impact the world is making on the Universe, although what we’re also interested in is the excellent musical potential of these sounds. Give it a listen, it’s prime sample material for all musicians out there who want to add an element of the cosmos to their work.
