Jubilee & Star Eyes - Locked

America's love affair with grime is summed up in this Slimzee-sampling track by Brooklyn duo.

Last Saturday I was at London club night House of Trax’s first birthday for which they’d deviated from their usual booty house fair for a night of grime. There was no messing around with the bookings: Slimzee and Bok Bok. It was the first time I’d seen Rinse FM stalwart Slimzee – one of Pay As You Go Cartel’s original founders (still the best crew name ever) – and I’m kicking myself for that now. The man is a magician: it was one of the most inventive, brutal and thrilling DJ sets I’ve witnessed for time. Anyway, I mention this because Brooklyn DJ/producer Jubilee and Star Eyes of NYC label Trouble & Bass recently paid tribute to the grime legend on new track Locked. Over a teasingly low-slung rattle, a selection of Slimzee’s finest Rinse shouts – including, inexplicably, “Trifle all night long.” – breathe a cheeky friction into the track’s heart. “Slimzee is a radio legend,” Jubilee told me over email. “Vivian [Star Eyes] has a crazy record collection holding a lot of grime and 2-step and I have two radio shows (and about to be hosting a third) so I guess it just makes sense that we would both think he is a boss. He plays a lot of records by our biggest influences.” Tune in.

Unknown to the Unknown released Jubilee & Star Eyes’ Locked on 24th January 2012.
