Gil Scott-Heron memoir due in January

Book will be published on Martin Luther King Day, an American national holiday that Scott-Heron and Stevie Wonder successfully campaigned for.

Six months following the legendary poet and musician’s death in May this year, a memoir by Gil Scott-Heron is to be released on 16th January 2012, reports The Wire.

“The memoir, titled The Last Holiday will be released on 16 January 2012, which is also Martin Luther King Day. As well as covering his involvement with the civil rights movement, the book recounts Scott-Heron’s experience touring 41 cities with Stevie Wonder in 1980-81, where he and Wonder successfully campaigned to have Martin Luther King’s birthday recognised as a national holiday.”

Canongate will publish Gil Scott-Heron’s memoir The Last Holiday on 16th January 2012. A tribute night featuring Jamie xx, Gilles Peterson and more will be held at Wilton’s Music Hall on 19th January 2012 (details here)
