Dirty Projectors – While You’re Here

The Brooklyn indie rockers reveal a poetic new song in honour of TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith, which is to be included on their upcoming 'About to Die' EP.

While You’re Here is simple in structure – orchestral strings loom throughout, often fleeting from the very sombre to the imminently hopeful, and are accompanied by singer David Longstreth’s poetic lyrics which concern the loss of a dear friend. The song, with its distinctly elegiac quality, is apparently inspired by the death of TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith, who passed away in April last year.

According to Longstreth the song is intended to be a dedication to the late musician: with its portrayal of emotion achieved so precisely via its use of its accentuated strings, and its resurgent lyrics such as “My friend is rising and shining again”, While You’re Here acts as an entirely worthwhile piece of remembrance.

Domino will release Dirty Projectors’ new EP ‘About To Die’ on the 5th November. You can pre-order it here.
