Frank Ocean may not be the most glamourous name for an R&B star and, unlike many, I can’t say I was that impressed by ‘Nostalgia/Ultra’, his debut free release that surfaced earlier this year. Novacane was easily the stand-out track, reaching the top 10 of the Billboard R&B charts, but the rest of the record lacked the same finesse and feeling. His song-writing ability was affirmed with Sure Thing for Miguel, but shortly after another song penned by Ocean, Beyoncé‘s I Miss You, was far from his best. All this points to Frank Ocean being one of the more inconsistent songwriters of late. Still, last week Thinking About You leaked it’s way onto the internet and since then I haven’t been able to stop listening to it. Fragile synths back beautiful and non-sensical lyrics, as Frank floats his way between fighter jets and ethereal falsetto. With Drake’s current direction and the melancholy sound of The Weekend, this year seems to be one where mopey R&B steals the limelight, and with Frank Ocean joining the fray I, for one, am looking forward to a lot more.
