C4's riddim Off Track proves grime can pop without sucking

Preditah , a young producer from Birmingham, is a key player in the new breed of grime producers, and after some great instrumentals last year came through with his first physical release, the ‘Circles EP’ on veteran DJ Logan Sama’s Earth616 imprint , this February. Preditah’s sound is sparse but remarkably effective with a typically shuffling 2-step underbelly and a way with bass lines that makes sure he stands out from the crowd. Alongside his instrumental work one particular single has been getting plenty of attention recently. ‘Off Track’ – a project with his brother and MC C4 – has been getting heavy rotation on radio and there is something about it that always perks your ears up when it pops up during a set. It harks back to grime’s roots but stays fresh with a strange but great hook its impossible to shake.

A remix of the track with grime empire Boy Better Know was recently made available and gives the original cut a bump. Favourites JME, Jammer and Frisco, who particularly makes a star-turn, join C4 on the ebullient riddim and it looks like it might be set to blow. Merging a pop sensibility with grime has been a big problem but this song has taken on the challenge and succeeded beautifully.

The single ‘Off Track’ will be released on 18th of March and the Boy Better Know Remix is available to stream below.
