The Census: "Have you ever ridden a horse?"

New feature time! In this series, we’ll find a few people doing interesting things and ask them the same, usually dumb, question. This week, we’ve asked people involved with the small music festival happening in Dalston in a few hours about horses and records.

Dignan Porch, a musician performing at the festival.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
Once in the New Forest. I didnt really ride it, or have any control, a little girl dragged it around while i sat on top.

What’s your favourite current record?
’5 Songs Forgotten or Mum’s Obviously Punked’ by Slushy Guts

Jack Shankly, a DJ playing at the festival.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
Not as of yet but I do harbour ambitions to when I find masculinity. I have ridden a large dog down a flight of stairs in Ealing once though.

What’s your favourite current record?
Subiza by Delorean. It’s completely euphoric, organic, modern pop music bearing all of Summer’s promise!

Nick Griffiths, the organiser of Land of Kings.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
Nope. When I was 5, I discovered my (very manly) allergy to shetland ponies while on a school trip to a farm. Since then, I lost interest in all things horse-y.

What’s your favourite current record?
Caribou’s ‘Swim’. I’m not sure about anyone else, but essential records of 2010 felt few and far between in my book. Then I heard this. Coming on like the soundtrack to a psychadelic carnival, it’s all intricately meshed and brilliantly unpredictable. Pop music at its best.

“The owner”, the Alibi club

Have you ever ridden a horse?
No.

What’s your favourite current record?
Burzum’s ‘Belus’. Even his harshest critics and haters cannot deny the sheer sonic power of this record. Equally hypnotic as it is twisted.

Nadia Ksaiba from Say Yes, a disco.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
I used to go riding when I was younger. I think the horse was called Nobby! The last time I tried to ride a horse was at college in the New Forest, I tried to bare-back a New Forest pony.

What’s your favourite current record?
Brennan Greens remix of Reade Truth’s Let’s Go To New York Instead on Wurst. I love the way it’s really silly, yet still good for a dance. All the stuff on Wurst is great.

Little Boots, a popstar.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
Yes – one of the first photo shoots I ever did was on a horse. I was dressed not dissimilarly from Xena Warrior Princess; but unfortunately due to “early” budgets the horse was not really media trained. So every time the flash went it bucked, until eventually I fell off directly onto my 5 inch stilettos. I somehow stood up, a weird shock went through my body, but I was pretty OK.

What’s your favourite current record?
I’m a bit obsessed with Acapella by Kelis.

Dan Spinney, a DJ.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
I have ridden a horse once – to my demise. I don’t even know if you would call it a horse – it was fucking huge. I didn’t really even want to ride it… but i did, and i fell, and they laughed as i sat in the mud in pain in my best jeans and new trainers which they warned me not to wear. Never again. Why you asking this anyway?

What’s your favourite current record?
The new LCD Soundsystem album is their best yet! I’m loving the wailing Strokes-esque guitar part on All I Want and You Wanted A Hit is great. OK, so thats an album. Trackwise, check out Real Life by Tanlines.

Thomas from Savage Beach, a DJ team

Have you ever ridden a horse?
I rode on a horse as a child in Australia. I will learn again.

What’s your favourite current record?
Raid a la Joya by Rebolledo. It’s a troublemaker.

Alex from Savage Beach, a DJ team

Have you ever ridden a horse?
I’m too laid back to ride a horse.

What’s your favourite current record?
I Like Triangles by Hounds of Hate (interviewed HERE ). Because I like triangles.

Rod Stanley, DJ and promoter of successful night Feeding Time.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
I do love a hot, steaming flank.

What’s your favourite current record?
Joey Negro’s Backstreet Brit Funk Compilation. Because we do slap-bass battles to it.

Ronojoy Dam, a DJ with Real Gold.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
No way. Upper class showmanship was never a forte, nor freakish jockey stature. Always game for a flutter, though, and I am wearing shoes made out of horse hair.

What’s your favourite current record?
Othello Woolf’s Deep Water, Deep Sleep. It’s cinematic, composed, elegant and otherworldly. All the things my life isn’t.

Firas, a DJ

Have you ever ridden a horse?
I once rode a camel called Rambo in Luxor, Egypt. The Egyptian guy kept on asking me if I wanted him to run. No I bloody didn’t. All I can remember from the experience was that Rambo smelt quite alot and seemed pretty grumpy. The closest I’ve come to riding a horse is probably going to somewhere like Skegness or Blackpool as a kid and getting on one of those minature ones. I have a feeling me and real big horse would mean disaster.

What’s your favourite current record?
Tim Green’s just done a fine little re-work of Cassius’ 1999, but it’s made me realise what a gem the original was too. It’s one of those tracks that wreaks of sunshine. In the past few weeks I’ve played it everywhere from the dark streets of Brixton right through to the alpine slopes of Snowbombing. Every time it’s done the job. People danced, smiled and moved their bodies. That’s usually a tell tale sign. As regards new new tracks I’m loving Sinden & SBTRKT – Marauder. Big tune.

Andrew and Robin from Gyratory System, a band

Have you ever ridden a horse?
Andrew: Yes, and a pony and a donkey. Trekking in the hills.

What’s your favourite current record?
Robin: Tristan und Isolde by Wagner. It actually was the first move away from classical tonality in music. It has the famous Tristan Chord, the minor sixth.

Rory Phillips, a DJ.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
I can barely ride a bike.

What’s your favourite current record?
The Dum Dum Girls’ album.

Daniel and Mariko from the band Yuck, who HERE were interviewed.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
Daniel: I rode a horse called Sonic. It had similar hair to the singer of A Grave With No Name (interviewed HERE)but slightly less conditioned. It walked very slowly and the saddle hurt my chime-chime. It was quite an uncomfortable moment in my life. I hope I never have to repeat it.

What’s your favourite current record?
Mariko: Neu!‘s ‘Neu!’ It’s too flowery and springy outside. I like its understated and calm sound.
