Sun Ra, Gil Scott-Heron and Afrika Bambaataa celebrated with portraits

Musician, writer and artist Jeb Loy Nichols will be exhibiting new works at Rough Trade East throughout the month of January. The exhibition will include woodcuts from his recent series of jazz and hip hop portraits. The portraits, inspired by Nichols’s residency in New York in the late 70s and early 80s, include Sun Ra, Gil Scott-Heron, Afrika Bambaataa, Bill Evans, Crazy Legs, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and KRS-1. Also on display will be new wood cuts and prints focusing on his life in rural Wales.

In conjunction Rough Trade have an exclusive Stax Records compilation for sale , selected by Jeb Loy and featuring killer cuts from the MGs, Lou Johnson, Staple Singers, Melvin Van Peebles, March Wind and more.

His exhibition, entitled Different Ways for Different Days will be on display at Rough Trade East until 31st January 2012.
