Watch the official coronation of the new rap king of Atlanta

The hip hop hot bed of Atlanta has seen a lot of change over the years but has always remained at the centre of the genre. Ever innovative, the city has seen the birth and spread of the Dungeon Family’s eccentric but rootsy funk, Lil Jon’s crunk and more recently trap, and has now found a new voice in the aptly named Future. A native to the city and cousin of an Organised Noize member, Future has steadily been making moves for the past couple of years with a mutant retracted trap sound made by the likes of Mike Will Made It and Will A Fool. These beats work perfectly with Future’s auto-tuned melodies and offer a new, spaced take on the bombast of Lex Luger’s early productions and the countless imitations that followed. His excellent debut album ‘Pluto’ was released earlier this week and continues to carve a path forwards and upwards whilst maintaining his strong local links.

Alongside his entourage and the guy who dresses up in a space suit on stage, Future was supported by a Mount Rushmore-like display of ATL rap on stage for his hometown album release concert. The crowd lap up the introduction of each superstar (naturally) and completely lose it at the end when Future explodes into his album’s giddy multi-tasking anthem Same Damn Time . It looks, and sounds, like a moment and places the deserving artist at the forefront of a very rich history.
