Premiere: Young Fathers - Rumbling

Young Fathers are Edinburgh-based hip hop artists Kayus Bankole, Graham Hastings and Alloysious Massaquoi, and their theatrical, goofy horror aesthetic could easily draw comparisons with overseas shock-mongerers OFWGKTA.

With children pulling deadpan faces, near-comically dark lighting and the eerie use of masks, the group pose the same are-we-or-aren’t-we-serious kind of threat as the unhinged laughter that follows an off-colour joke in their video for the single Rumbling. Taking a marked step away from Odd Future comparisons, though, the group have a blisteringly distinct delivery style and linguistic poeticism, as well as juddering production that swings and bounces enjoyably, even welcomingly. Like their contemporaries, Young Fathers are emblazoning a name for themselves on the hip hop scene with shock tactics and a crudely DIY aesthetic, both of which make them swaggeringly powerful, and yet unlike other groups, they’re just not as threatening or agressive to their listeners. They want to invite you into their music, and you’ll want to step inside.

Anticon will release ‘Tape One’ on the 10th December, 2012.
