Laura Mvula - Green Garden

Laura Mvula recently came fourth in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list, and seems to have rapidly risen to a point in her burgeoning career where pretty much anything could happen over the next twelve months. Here’s the follow-up to the South Africa-shot video for She – which we premiered in November.

Although starting in a rather nondescript patch of side-road concrete, Green Garden stays true to its name by building into a lush, colourful spectacle. Laura, trailed by lively dancers and drummers, travels up a hillside – before reaching an edenic patch of sun-pierced woodland. This growth is matched in the track, which gradually kicks up a storm with handclaps, twinkling music-box percussion and Imogen Heap-esque backing vocals. But for all this air of flourishing fertility, it’s still Laura’s mercurial voice that’s the richest component: breezily shifting between gravelly soul and pure, theatrical pop sounds throughout.
