John Maus gets hysterical in this Glasslands performance

Watch the ex-Haunted Graffiti member, synth romantic hero and academic throw himself into a typically intense set.

“What I’m trying to do is appear as something else than the world as it stands,” John Maus says in the interview that cuts into his dramatic performance in this Pitchfork.tv video. “Because I believe that’s what we all really want, to see one another and to be seen, and my particular wager is that the hysterical body is perhaps exemplary in its affirmation of that.” Blending into these words are clips of Maus thumping his chest, projecting his booming voice and wild expression as he performs at Glasslands in Brooklyn, confronting his audience with this theoretical “hysterical body” in the flesh, and leaving the viewer feeling restless.
