Erol Alkan - A Hold On Love

Erol Alkan's 'Illumination' EP – somehow, the first set of solo tracks that the DJ and producer has ever put his name to – flits between grubby and raucous acid house, dubby and downtempo Saint Etienne-style balearica, and, on A Hold On Love, Inner City-style techno. The latter track has been graced with a really excellent video by Daniel Brereton (who recently directed the delightful sleazefest that was the video for Connan Mockasin's I'm The Man, That Will Find You) that is gentle and affecting.

Taking place in the Lake District, Brereton's video is a nostalgic recollection of an unseen narrator's first rave experience (according to a press release, it's actually Brereton's own story). Where "rave memories" music videos tend to fall into the usual pitfalls, like repurposing slo-mo '90s rave footage, or staging or reconstructing a party, Brereton keeps things simple and uses subtitles to tell the story. It's a way slower and way more pastoral video than you'd expect from uptempo, urban machine music, but that seems to fit Erol's decidedly indie stance.

Phantasy Sound released the 'Illumination' on December 2nd 2013. Erol Alkan will play Bugged Out's New Year's Eve party with Daniel Avery.
