Deptford Goth - Feel Real

One of the best things about Deptford Goth’s sensational debut album ‘Life After Defo’ – and it’s worth being that hyperbolic about – is the sense it has of the South London-based artist stepping into the limelight. Warmer and more hook-led than his previous releases, the songs of this record seem to reflect some kind of barrier – emotionally and sonically – coming down, and in the blue-soaked new visual for the next single Feel Real this up-front mindset comes across more than ever. For one thing, it follows the mould set by his videos for Life After Defo and Union by splashing the lyrics to the track across the screen, lending them a new clarity. Spelt out for you like this, the hook “forever meant nothing when we had nothing” feels particularly poignant, taking a few beats to resonate in your retinas. Added to this lyrical plainness is the sight of Daniel Woolhouse’s face, split in two and washed in blue but nonetheless straight-on and singing. The lyrics pummel you with the idea that everything is joining together for the first time in a long time, and that the world suddenly feels more real, and for this defining moment in Woolhouse’s career it couldn’t be more apt.
