David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight)

The Stars (Are Out Tonight) is the new single from David Bowie forthcoming ‘The Next Day’, and it’s pretty great. Directed by veteran music video director (and past Bowie collaborator) Floria Sigismondi, the (potentially NSFW) video features Bowie and Tilda Swinton playing a middle class couple in an unsettling, Lost Highway-esque version of US suburbia. ‘The Next Day’ clearly riffs on looking back, and the video continues this theme both in the obvious way (the couple are haunted by a couple of rockstars who bear resemblance to Bowie’s various iterations through the years) and in less-than-obvious (see the shot of Bowie in alien mode from The Man Who Fell To Earth on the cover of the magazine at the beginning). It would make a worthy addition to our recent Bowie on film feature, as well as being a strong second single, signalling great things to come from the upcoming album.
