Bon Iver's exquisitely arranged 30 minute session performance for 4AD

Bon Iver’s impeccably pretty and surprisingly broad musical vision is an exquisite thing to behold live. This video, shot in the studios of his record label 4AD, is a quite lovely example of this. Faultlessly stripped back, his voice is a quite wonderful instrument, but the thing that readers of the site, and thus people interested in the new side of music, should watch out for is the amazing imagination of Bon Iver’s arrangements, laid as bare as they are here. It’s fascinating the number of fans of supposedly advanced music who discount Bon Iver’s music on the basis that it’s folk and he has a beard, yet, listening to how his melodies are pulled, repeated, dragged, piled on top of one another, it’s hard not to call Justin Vernon the most gifted song-structurer of the modern age. This gorgeously shot video is just more evidence of that, and warming proof that one of the most popular and singularly talented musicians of the era is also one of the most adventurous.
