Goldie mixes Fabriclive 58

The drum & bass celebrity is responsible for the latest edition of Fabriclive.

Goldie’s led a fairly interesting life, which at times has veered more towards it-girl than musical innovator, which has led to the quality of his music getting slightly, if unfairly, sidelined.

Anyway, Fabric have asked the drum & bass godhead to make the latest mix CD, which is fairly neat. Check out the tracklisting below, and his quotes on the mix under that.

“For me, this has probably been one of the best years of my entire life! I’m playing music better than I’ve ever played before. I’m not claiming to be the best technical DJ, I never have done. For me, I try to get the alchemy right, which I’ve done on this mix: each of these are standalone tunes. It is dynamic, it does take you from one extreme to the other, because for me that’s what my life is like. It’ll be bikram yoga one morning, then DJing long into the night. Everything is balanced, not too much of one thing. When I think of the D&B tunes on this mix, I think of them as spiritual euphoria, like I’ve been lifted out of something. This music – this wildstyle music – is not for the faint-hearted.

I think certain music and different genres now seems to be like painting by numbers. Certain people within certain types of music need to take more risks. Coming from a graffiti background, drum & bass is so complicated, and I need that – but that’s my choice right? This is the music that stirs my soul to the core. I think all of my life I suffered with abandonment and being misunderstood, and the two things I love most reflect that: there’s drum & bass music, right at the very bottom of the ladder, and graffiti, one of the most misunderstood art forms on the planet. But look how far both have exploded globally and how they’ve always been fuelled by innovation. I couldn’t have chosen two more misunderstood and complex things. I made the artistic choice to be in both.

I’m about to make a new album, a really beautiful piece of work. Working with the orchestra, working with these live instrumentalists, has reminded me of what I should’ve be doing. Right now, melodies are just flying, they’re coming straight out of my creative soul. It’s just been a matter of finding the right output.” – Goldie
