Kendrick Lamar - The Jig Is Up (Dump'n)

In appreciation of the support fans have given him over this most recent and significant week for Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar, he’s released a brand new track called The Jig is Up (Dump’n). Produced by J.Cole and Canei Finch, it’s a very loud and even bombastic track, with Kendrick opting for growl mode. He directly addresses ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’, taking a quick shot at Shyne’s much-mocked denunciation of the album and going as far as criticising people for not “framing [him] as the Mona Lisa of hip-hop”.

If you were being critical you could say that Kendrick is feeling himself too much, sucked in by a fanatical urge to stamp the week-old album a stone cold classic, but given the very impressive sales and the blanket praise his daring major-label debut album has received it’s difficult to begrudge him for enjoying his moment. The track, mixed by Ali as usual, sounds pretty great too.
