Dummy Mix 23 // Kasper Bjørke

Danish producer and DJ KASPER BJORKE takes us on a journey from dusk till dawn with this eyes-closed, deep and heady club mix. Hell yeah. His second album ‘Standing On Top Of Utopia’ is due later this month on HFN Music.

Describe your mix for us.

Quirky, dancey and entertaining, hopefully – from deep to acidy house and techno tunes straight from the crate. I would put this mix on in my car (if I had one) or right before going out – or for the afterparty, hehe.

Which artists have you included and why?

I’ve included a few local Copenhagen artists and a bunch of international acts that I really like – from underground to more commercial sounds, like the Massive Attack track and my own latest single, with vocals and such. It’s important for me to make an interesting mix rather than the stereotypical, credible DJ mix, which to me can be really boring. I only do around 5 mixes a year, as I need to find enough exciting material to put in, and it can take alot of time…

Your second album is out soon. It’s very good. Did you get second album syndrome?

Thank you very much. No actually I didn’t get the second coming syndrome, haha. This album sort of just came to me over a period of 8-10 months of studio work – I had this idea from the beginning how it should sound, and I sort of just pursuied that feeling.

Where do you enjoy DJ-ing most in the world?

Reykjavik is one of my favorite places on earth – people really go nuts up there. It’s almost like a crossing between a fight and actual dancing, especially in the smaller venues where people are crammed together. They party like it’s their final hour, really. I think I’ve been playing there around 15 times now, and the crowd never lets the DJ down. Even after the financial crisis hit Iceland, they still have a lot of fun and enjoy themselves.

What are you looking forward to in 2010?

First of all I look forward to releasing my album in February – it’s always a bit frustrating right before a release, it’s a hard time for me to get inspired to make new music – so it’s gonna be nice to get on the other side so I can start working on new material, and hopefully spend alot of time in the studio. 2009 was very busy with touring as a DJ and all sorts of other projects, so this year is all about getting new tracks done, also for my Kasper Bjørke & His Friendly Ghost solo outfit which is more techno and house than disco. Then I can’t wait for spring and summer to hit Denmark – I was just in Brazil and really enjoyed the weather there.

What new music is getting you exciting at the moment?

I’m really look forward to the upcoming LCD Soundsystem and Daft Punk releases. At the moment, I listen alot to the albums from Warpaint, The xx, Animal Collective, I Got You On Tape, Wareika, Lindstrøm & Christabelle, Desire and some old Velvet Underground and some of Björks albums – it fits the Danish winter…

What’s your favourite colour?

Dark blue (at the moment).
