Jessie Ware performing 'Running' live

Last night Jessie Ware sang to a packed out room at The Nave, a church connected to a local Steiner school in London’s Highbury & Islington area. It was her debut headline show but if she was nervous, not a scrap showed in her powerhouse performance. Ware carried her voice like tightly coiled, oiled elastic, springing it from her chest to the high church ceiling and snapping it back with ease. Crucially, though, that technical perfection was combined with a syrupy, heart-stopping warmth that hit right between the eyes. In-between songs she couldn’t have been more humble, expressing with a laugh her relief that her mum couldn’t have bought all the tickets as there were lots of people here she didn’t recognise. She also sweetly pointed out and thanked Julio Bashmore and Slime, both of whom she wrote songs with on her forthcoming debut album. With that talent, and that attitude, Jessie Ware should be unstoppable.

I caught the final song Running on my iPhone, with Jessie performing with The Invisible’s Dave Okumu who produced her forthcoming debut album. The filming’s a little shaky but you get the idea: Jessie Ware killed it.
