Learn how to use found sound in a new documentary with Bill Ryder-Jones

We run an occasional series called Found Sound, where guys like Gang Colours, Jon Hopkins, and oOoOO have sent us their self-sourced field recordings and samples and told us all about them. Lost And Found is a documentary series by Noisey and Philips' You Need To Hear This that has followed artists like Scratcha DVA around their home cities with a zoom recorder in hand, the objective being to make a track out of whatever sounds they collect that day.

In their newest episode, Bill Ryder-Jones – once a guitarist with The Coral, nowadays a composer of strange, haunting film music – traverses across Liverpool and the Wirral, picking up the sounds of trains, gulls, a piano, and a busking trumpeter. Ryder-Jones is an energetic and enthusiastic chap on camera, so the track he makes in the end – a forlorn little piece with lonely, wandering brass – comes as an unexpected surprise. Head over to You Need To Hear This to hear the track in full.

If you want to imitate Ryder-Jones, then be sure to read our guide of where to find found sound.
