Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never)'s record label, Software, has expanded quite a lot recently, releasing records by the likes of Suicideyear, Napolian, Sculpture, and Thug Entrancer to an enthusiastic response. GABI is another new artist with the label and her first song is called Koo Koo.
The focus of Koo Koo is GABI's voice. Known as Gabrielle Herbst to friends and family, GABI studied Balinese dance and gamelan in Indonesia (Jeez! Not another new musician who studied Balinese dance and gamelan…) before studying voice and composition at Bard College in New York. Her studies led to her developing her own experimental vocal composition technique, which you can hear on the acrobatic, avant-MOR pop stylings of Koo Koo, where GABI's voice takes on all sorts of different shapes and styles across its three-minute running time.
If you live in New York, you can see GABI play at Baby's All Right on October 2nd.
Software Recording Co. released Koo Koo on September 24th 2014 (buy).
