"This is one of those rare, unexplainable things," says the French actor to his companion at the start of Unknown Mortal Orchestra's video for Can't Keep Checking My Phone. But, just what is going on in the clip, taken from Ruban Nielson and co.'s 'Multi-Love' single? Director Dimitri Basil has this to offer:
"Can't Keep Checking My Phone is so full of sounds and its lyrics are so elusive so I decided that one idea wouldn’t do the track justice. My approach was to present the multiple ideas as if they were a trading card deck. Trading cards, like Mars Attacks, have a short description accompanied by illustrations. In this case, the deck is about strange occurrences, syndromes or phenomena."
Whereas the busy, danceable hit sounds as though it could have been recorded in a jungle, the cinematic opening of horns and brass become a red-herring for a different visual interpretation that the track suggests. Ruban Nielson's work will always be intriguing if it remains this unique and unexplainable.
