Video: Rap, 17.03.20Theodor Black is the latest artist to feature on Disclosed Doors, a new filmed session series which goes further to uncover the personality behind each musician. Previous participants include Rada, Zilo and Santino Le Saint.
We recently released ‘Slow Burns/Anxiety‘ by Dalston creative Theodor Black via our DMY Recordings label, and you can watch the accompanying video for ‘Slow Burns’ here.
Talking about growing up in South London, as well as his creative process and inspirations, Theodor Black discusses ‘Slow Burns’ and the millennial anxieties that came with it.
You can watch Theodor’s session above, and we fired a few questions about the series across to Henry Cristerna, founder of Disclosed Doors, to find out more about the new platform.
What is Disclosed Doors?
Disclosed Doors is a new London-based music platform that showcases up-and-coming artists in a unique way. At a time when live music sessions are generally becoming stale in our opinion, we’re here to innovate the space and give exciting artists the opportunity to push their music and their message in more engaging ways.
How is it different to other sessions channels?
We combine traditional music sessions with candid explorations into each artist’s identity so that the viewer develops a greater appreciation of the music and musicians they’re listening to. Each piece is a totally different concept to reflect the subject matter, aesthetic and personality of each artist – one live performance might be prefaced by an interview, the next by a poem, the next by a skit, and so on.
What are the plans for the future of Disclosed Doors?
In a general sense, we want to successfully create a space where artists feel they can really get across the things that matter about their music. I feel like there’s an opportunity within the depth of our videos to engage with issues such as community, individuality, mental health, and so on, while still fundamentally showcasing great music.
Outside of that, we’re looking to start collaborating with other music platforms or publications that we look up to, while also building on our visual content with excursions into areas such as events and radio.
Tell us about the Theodor Black session
Theo shows us around his hometown and discusses the reality of living in London as a young adult: “It’s expensive to live here, there’s no space to really breathe.” He builds on these thoughts with a dizzying live performance of ‘Slow Burns’, a song that deals with urban decay and the anxiety that comes with it. In the performance, we wanted to create visuals that reflect Theo’s views on the woozy cyclicality of living in London. Let us know how we did!
