Toronto’s Lil Berete is someone we’ve been keeping a close eye on, following his ‘Icebreaker’ mixtape on XL Recordings’ New Gen imprint – and his sugar-sweet rap joint ‘Time Flies’ made it into our Best Tracks of 2018 list. Now, the Canadian rapper has linked up with Harlem Spartans’ Loski for ‘Go N Get It’, employing the same syrupy melodies that he’s become known for.
A few days ago, Berete posted that the city of Toronto was trying to ban him from filming music videos there, and that’s presumably why the pair journeyed to Iceland with Kirx to shoot the above video. With a backdrop of geysers and black sand, it’s a scenic setup that complements the infectious cut from the pair. We caught five with Lil Berete to find out about the new track and his plans for 2019…
Can you talk us through your new track with Loski?
Lil Berete: “It’s the first single for my new tape. Loski is my first international feature so I’m very excited for it, tryna get the world’s attention right now.”
How did you and him link up for it and what was it like working together?
“Label and publisher made that connection happen, we both linked up and we caught a vibe, we both young and got talent so it was an easy one.”
Where did you shoot the video?
“I shot the video in Iceland. It was amazing and fun, a different experience for sure.”
Loski’s from the UK drill scene – what do you make of it as a genre?
“Kinda like Toronto underground rap but it’s bigger there, I respect the grind.”
What’s next for you?
“Mixtape about to drop this year, that’s a big build up for my album. Tryna work with more artists and get more videos out. Skrr!”
