In March of this year, the Leeds band HOOKWORMS released their debut album ‘Pearl Mystic’ and caused quite a stir – with some going all out to call it the best psychedelic album this country has produced in about a decade. That’s up for further discussion amongst the critics but the band have gotten straight back on the grind, adding new member “JN” to their roster and prepping a new single Radio Tokyo for Too Pure Singles Club.
The B-side No Returning is a rich, echo-heavy track that bares no direct relationship to the Wire track of the same name but has key themes – “ageing, detachment and mortality” – that definitely do, if only indirectly. The video features two archetypal tourists (too-functional trainers, white ankle socks, cargo shorts, shades, baseball caps, even a bumbag) standing in various beauty spots around Rome unchanging to the crowds and sites around them. A comment on the banality of mass tourism perhaps, but that may be too obvious. The key to this ““roman à clef””:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_a_clef could be the unfortunate woman falling over in the background around one and a half minute mark. Anyway, watch the video; HOOKWORM’s UK summer tour dates are listed below.
