The video for London-based rapper Adian Coker’s track Cream is a visual assault that’s slightly reminiscent of ex-A$AP Mob member Dominic Lord’s Pierce – rapid-fire images of luxury are swirled before the viewer in a decadent kaleidoscope over Coker’s relaxed-yet-poised rapping. We had a chat with the artist to pick apart his Baroque and film noir influences, his admiration of Kanye’s visuals and his upcoming projects.
Hi, Adian! Could you introduce yourself to Dummy readers?
Hi! My name is Adian Coker and I’m a 25 year old producer and rapper from Woolwich, South-East London. The original home of the mighty Arsenal Football Club!
This is a crazy video. What’s the main idea behind it?
Thank you! Essentially we wanted to create a performance video but one that was really visually striking and had quite an alternative aesthetic. So there were a lot of Baroque and gothic influences that went in to the mix to get us to this point. Lets not forget the Lambo! You don’t get more “hip hop video” than a Lambo!
What’s your favourite part?
Is it a cop out if I say I like it all?! If pushed I’d say the bit where the Mona Lisa is on fire. It’s such a huge statement and I think, visually, it’s a pretty poignant and striking part of the song. I like the pole dancer bits as well because I’m a 25 year old man.
Who are your biggest influences, visually and in terms of rapping?
In terms of rapping it’s the usual guys, Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco. Those names are always mentioned because they’re the greats so, naturally, people aspire to be like them or are influenced by them. Visually I’m a big fan of Kanye’s video’s, but I’m also a European cinema kind of guy. I like a lot of realism and film noir stuff. But really, if it looks good I’m into it.
What have you got coming up on the horizon this year?
Well I’m really excited about the release of this video and I’ve worked with the director, Drew Cox, for the next single. Then we’ll put out my next mixtape ‘Young World’ later on this year. And I’m looking forward to doing copious amounts of gigs too.
