A$AP Rocky – Purple Kisses
As you might expect from a track called ‘Purple Kisses’, this latest video from A$AP Rocky sees him in a subdued, romantic mood, with a not-so-subtle colour filter and a lot of heavy petting. Featuring more pretty girls and less goofing off than usual, this is still a typical Rocky video; it’s a straight-up depiction of what he gets up to in his down time, and it makes him look grotesquely cool.
Animal Collective – Today’s Supernatural
New York-based band Animal Collective are arguably, however, having a lot more fun than purple-tinged rappers in their latest clip, which has clown costumes and a Chinese dragon careering across a desert. The video anticipates the release of the group’s ninth studio album, Centipede Hz, out on Domino Records in September.
Twigs – Ache
British singer Twigs has one of those voices that stays with you long after the first listen, and to match, she’s proving to be a master of visuals that stay with you long after a first watch. Revolving around a single, arresting image (this one being a man, face encased in what seems to be a hockey mask, thrashing around in an empty car park), there’s so much to love in the less-is-more approach behind this video.
Physical Therapy – Drone On
‘Drone On’ comes from *Physical Therapy’s Safety Net EP, which is currently out on Hippos in Tanks. Frantic, fraught and yet shimmeringly elegant, the heated energy of the track is bizarrely captured in this sort-of-romantic, sort-of-weird depiction of cowboy grooms and rollerblading brides.
DJ Khaled – I Wish You Would / Cold ft. Kanye West and Rick Ross
This video, released earlier this week, features DJ Khaled, Yeezy and Rozay, all mashed together in a shaky-camera, aggressively monochrome tribute to themselves, as it combines both DJ K’s recent behemoth track ‘I Wish You Would’ and Kanye’s so-good-he-named-it-three-times ‘Cold’. It doesn’t seem to have much point, but it’s full of enough fierce facial expressions and wacky effects to convince you that it might be trying to make one.
