Palmistry on how his father’s death inspired ‘Afterlife’ and working with SOPHIE on Rihanna material
What were you doing at age 19? I was living on a diet of Subway footlongs and warm Ribena. The same can't be said for young Norwegian producer Hasta. Coming from the same camp as contemporary hip hop beat luminary Cashmere Cat, the young buck (also known as Thomas Wesenlund Wahl) has already amassed an impressive host of credits under this belt – from work on GoldLink's breakthrough cut Dance On Me to a huge edit of Norwegian band Highasakite’s track Someone Who’ll Get It (which clocked up over 100,000 streams).
A dab hand at original productions too, Hasta dropped his single Urge earlier in the summer. Taking onboard its namesake, RITUAL and Cal's long pop vocals paired with Hasta's snaking R&B production make this a pretty irresistible number.
A little bit hooked on his low-key pop sound, we got Hasta to take us a little deeper under the promising surface of Norway's underground music scene with a playlist of the country's must-hear acts – and here's what he had to say:
"Here are top 15 tunes that I really like from fellow Norwegian producers and artists – some of them friends, and others people I look up to.
Cashmere Cat was a natural selection, he’s one of my biggest inspirations and he is, in my opinion, the best and strongest artist we have right now. I also included tunes from Rytmeklubben (Hi Tom, Torjus, DJ Karaoke and Henrik the Artist), Loveless and Bearson. I really love and admire their unique sounds and they always bring something strong to the table. The rest are people I listen to because they have cool productions and have really fresh toplines.
I also included my track Urge, 'cause I’ve been digging that one a lot, and I’m super happy that so many people like it."
