Yoin - Martial Status/Wrong To Feel This Way [stream]

A pair of footwork-tinged piano house numbers make up the latest in Scottish label Tuff Wax's 'Aberdeen Truth' 12" series.

In the Granite City, there is a storm quietly brewing. Started up in 2009, Tuff Wax Records – in their own words – is a “boutique label aiming to revive interest in high quality vinyl, catalogue emerging scenes in the UK and release niche, collectable low-run pressings”. While the term ‘boutique label’ has become somewhat contentious – essentially all small, regional, vinyl-based labels are in a sense boutique by nature – there is considerable backbone to Tuff Wax and their mission statement.

Aberdeen has a passionate and vibrant local electronic music scene, with all-local line ups regularly selling out venues. The Tuff Wax label is at the heart of it, and with their ‘Aberdeen Truth’ series of limited-edition, coloured 7” vinyl they’re pushing artists close to their hearts and ears. One such artist is Yoin, who’s first release marks Vol. 2 in said series. Martial Status/Wrong To Feel This Way stretch yawning, off-beat footwork drumkicks over a bed of piano house, and have already caught the ear of Machine Drum who included Marital Status on his mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’s first Xfm show back in July. Have a listen below.
