Rapper and pop culture enthusiast XV has achieved an extraordinary love letter to the zeitgeist in his latest mixtape, Popular Culture.

Coated in film and TV samples, this tape not only wears its cheesiest influences openly on its sleeve, but also embraces popular appeal in its guest slots, featuring an outstanding turn from ScHoolboy Q on the monstrous track ‘Aaahh! Real Monsters’. Lunice and Hudson Mohawke also leave their distinctive mark on ‘Mary Kate & Ashley’, a ridiculously fun, headrush of a track that carries that tell-tale metallic bounce.

Warner Bros will release XV’s The Awesome EP on 26th June; until then, this nostalgic (for the not-so-distant past) and deeply enjoyable mixtape is worth a listen or two. Stream it and download it for free below.
