The Trump administration is banning TikTok downloads in the US from Sunday

Chinese messaging app WeChat is also being banned over national security concerns

The US Commerce Department has issued an order to block people in the US from downloading the TikTok app as of Sunday September 20th, Reuters reports.

Over the last few weeks, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, has been in talks with US companies like Microsoft and Oracle to create a new company, TikTok Global, that would ease the Trump administration’s concerns over user data security.

Microsoft has now dropped out of the bidding, leaving Oracle and Walmart as the frontrunners to hold stake in the new TikTok company.

If no sale is completed before November 12th, further prohibitions will effectively blacklist the app from American phones.

The Chinese messaging app WeChat is also being blocked as a download.

TikTok previously launched legal action with the Trump administration over the proposed US ban.
