suicideyear - Japan [mixtape]

Hear the allusive debut mixtape from a rising Louisiana bedroom rap producer.

Filtering the aesthetic of the rap mainstream through everyday melancholy and europhia and back out again through the internet, suicideyear is an 18 year old Baton Rouge producer who recently got a break when Brodinski played him on Radio 1, and has gone from remixing in his bedroom to hook-ups with Young Money.

His debut mixtape ‘Japan’ is the sound of someone who’s soaked in the endless bangers that have dominated the rap charts in recent years and worked them down to a style that, whilst it carries the hallmarks of his inspirations, utilises them in more introverted and delicate ways. His remix of Travis Porter’s Do A Trick is an obvious example because it’s a retracted take on a song precisely about cash and big arses but it’s evidenced throughout the tape, especially on the central track Interest. It’s free to stream and available to buy from The Wavery Collective Bandcamp.
