Kero Kero Bonito - Kero Kero Bonito

Super fun, super colourful pop music from London.

Kero Kero Bonito are a band (Sarah, Gus, and Jamie) from London who apparently met on a Japanese ex-pat community bulletin board. The kind of hyper-Japanness of their stuff is pretty hard to ignore. Take, for example, their name: "kero" is the sound a frog makes (in Japanese, obviously), Kero Kero Chime is the name of a manga, etc.

Their eponymous single Kero Kero Botnito is super bright, super colourful, and super, super fun. You can probably see a link between what Kero Kero Bonito are doing and what labels like PC Music are doing, but more than anything this song reminds us of those multi-coloured DIY bands who surfaced around the Myspace era, i.e. the time when a new band would appear on Myspace with a few demos, a new label would appear in some part of London like New Cross and put out their debut 7", a new promoter would appear and put on their first few few shows, and then neither the band nor label nor promoter would be heard from again. A genuinely excellent and highly creative time for music, as sarcastic as that description might sound.

Their debut mixtape is out through one of our favourite indie labels, Double Denim Records, on August 25th. (Canny listeners and Discogs trawlers among you will know that this mixtape actually came out last year, but shhh.)

Double Denim Records release 'Kero Kero Bonito' on August 25th 2014.
