Rihanna gets a lot of flack, which seems to centre around her supposedly being too obvious. Drunk On Love feels like a flicked V at her detractors, aligning her with a band renowned for their introverted emotion. “You know I’m drunk on love,” she sings over The xx’s Intro, the opening track to their Mercury Prize winning debut album ‘xx’. Dark, moody and thick with ambiguity, Intro makes the perfect foil for Rihanna’s confessional lyrics: “I wear my heart on my sleeve / Always let love take the lead.” If Youtube comments are anything to go by (LOL), then it’ll probably ruffle the feathers of a few diehard fans from both camps but make no mistake, this is one hell of a pop song. Sure, Intro is supreme in its own right but under Rihanna’s gaze its heat burns higher, bringing that underlying friction to the surface. Nice move, RiRi.
