PJ Harvey is odds on to win the Mercury Prize

Bookies have named the singer songwriter as the 6/4 favourite to win the prize, after several have staked four figure sums on her triumph.

Bookmakers William Hill have revealed that PJ Harvey is currently the solid favourite to win the 2011 Mercury Prize, with odds of 6/4.

Several four-figure bets have reportedly been made on the singer taking home the accolade, while other substantial bets have been placed on underdogs King Creosote and Jon Hopkins.

William Hill’s spokesperson Rupert Adams said, “The judges have produced a number of surprise winners in recent years, Anthony and The Johnsons and Speech Debelle to name a few. Over the weekend we have seen significant gambles on King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, who our punters think could be the dark horse this year.”

The Mercury Prize Awards Show will be broadcast on BBC2 on the 6th September.
