Oceania - Coil Up EP

Nervy, beguiling electronics from Russia, released this month on French imprint 7even Recordings.

Oceania is a Russian act whose second EP ‘Coil Up’ was released on French imprint 7even Recordings earlier in the month. Originally the solo work of one Nick Kostylew, whose ‘Postable’ EP received good reactions last year, Oceania now seem to be operating as a duo along with mysterious vocalist and previous collaborator “N.”.

You sense a fair bit of James Blake had been listened to prior to the creation of Black, but it still glides along intriguingly, and closer Strange People feels like a Knife cut that’s been left to fester in a dank, dark place. Streets stands particularly tall: a beguiling ground-down pop number – with N.‘s plaintive voice reminiscent of Inga Copeland’s recent output – that drifts off into a very unnerving space indeed. Out to Disco Naviete for the tip on this one.

7seven Recordings released the ‘Coil Up’ EP on the 4th March.
