Nicki Minaj – Starships

Nicki Minaj makes a pop song about being on the floor and drinking booze.

Those hoping for Nicki Minaj to continue reinventing rap will probably not be very happy with her new song, Starships, containing as it does that noisey Eurohouse sound that has infected so much mainstream hip hop, an irresponsible message about paying rent and a chorus that goes “I’m on floor, I love to dance”, rather unnecessarily. To be frank, critical opinion of this high octane, Booze Britain-esque rap trance is so low I desperately want to like it, and Starships is so obnoxiously huge that it’s impossible not to be in some way awed by it. But the sense of boredom at hearing “And then I was so drunk” stories is so yawning, so gap year, that not even Nicki Minaj can quell it. At the end of the day, I’d listen to Nicki Minaj read the phone book, something that sounds pleasantly restful after the bombardment power-compression on Starships, which you can stream at Rap Radar.
