Nicki Minaj has a notoriously schizophrenic public profile, veering impulsively between an all-singing living doll and a hard-talking Young Money rapper. This comes across in her unpredictable style and her hyperactive, far-from-seamless live shows. Recently, though, she seems to be figuring out where the natural balance between the two personas lies.

In this new cut, featuring long-time mentor Lil Wayne, Nicki’s at her most serious in the verses and her most twee in the choruses, playing up both aspects of her character as strengths. The two collide strangely with Lil Wayne’s drawling verse (“so wet that I need goggles” and “‘scuse my French, but I’m a long kisser” are surely some of the best-worst Lil Wayne lyrics in a while), but as a whole, High School makes for a fun listen. Young Money will release ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re Up’ on the 19th November 2012.
