Morrissey attempts to sue the NME

Singer claims the NME portrayed him as racist.

The Guardian has reported that Morrissey has made the first steps towards legal action against the NME’s publisher IPC Media and former editor Conor McNicholas after the magazine printed an interview with the singer on November 28, 2007 which he claims was defamatory and portrayed him as racist.

A judge is currently deciding whether Morrissey has grounds to pursue a libel case after being quoted as claiming that “the gates of England are flooded. The country’s been thrown away… Although I don’t have anything against people from other countries, the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears.”

Initial threats of legal action were made directly after the publication of the interview in 2007 and Morrissey has since donated large sums of money to charities Love Music Hate Racism.
