James Blake and Rob da Bank - 'One On One Off'

Post-dubstep messiah and Radio 1 tastemaker go head-to-head in two hours of good music.

Rob da Bank hosted James Blake on his Radio 1 show on Friday night, and the result is a diverse, immersive listen that sees the two DJs taking a “One On One Off” approach to their playlist choices. Bouncing around between the likes of Scuba, D’Angelo, Beyonce, Django Django and Jamie xx, this two hour radio show is a sugar-rush of some of the most exciting music around today, and well worth a listen.

Experimental, other-worldly themes jump through the tracklist, with highlights including the ear-stretching Death Grips track ‘Guillotine’, and Moodymann’s arctic re-work of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born to Die’ at 1:02.30.

Blake in particular comes to the show armed with a sleeveful of bizarrely beautiful choices, including his own “harmonimix” of Trim’s ‘Confidence Boost’. Explaining the ‘Harmonimix’ moniker, the post-dubstep producer says, “It’s just me messing about with stuff. It boils down really to me sticking chords behind things you wouldn’t expect, that didn’t need it.” That just about sums it up.
