Honey Dijon receives The Queer Visionary Award for her work in the LGBTQIA+ community

Honey Dijon received a lifetime achievement award last week from New York’s Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art.

The Queer Visionary Award was specially created by visual artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase to recognise and celebrate pioneers in the LGBTQIA+ community. According to the press release, the Chicago-born DJ embodies “Leslie-Lohman’s guiding values of queer liberation and magic.”

Dijon has consistently highlighted issues facing the Queer community over the course of her career, branching out into the worlds of artistry, fashion, sociology and beyond to make a difference in her community wherever she can. Last year, Dummy sat down with Honey to discuss tokenism in the music industry, how real change is made within dance music and why dance floors should be safe spaces for everyone. Established in 2016, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art collects, preserves and exhibits around 30,000 objects by LGBTQIA+ artists or related to LGBTQIA+ themes, issues and people. The museum’s founders, J. Frederic Lohman and Charles W. Leslie, first began exhibiting their collection of gay art in their loft in 1969.

After receiving the award, Honey posted on Instagram: “I am filled with so much love and joy today.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this honor and to be surrounded by so many friends, pioneers, and legends of New York that came out to support was truly deeply emotional and humbling for me…I felt like the most beautiful and powerful woman on earth.”

A special honour was also given to Jamaican-American artist, curator and art historian Margaret Rose Vendryes, who died earlier this year.
