Artifact – Archaic Line

An EP of pattering, eerie garage cutting a sharp swathe through bedroom-made dance music.

Deadplate Records is a new London label whose second release should get them a bit of well deserved attention. It comes from Cologne-based Bristol producer Artifact, and is a record of eerie delicate, bedroom-made garage. However, the thing that really sets it apart is that, unlike a lot of records doing this sort of thing, you could actually imagine dancing to it. Title track Archaic Line is a pleasing, pattering shuffle, but the kick packs punch, and there’s some deep bass lurking below the surface. Deserted though is better, metallic synth stabs, wallowing sub, it’s solid neck-jerking stuff. Graphics provides a pretty sublime remix of Archaic Line on the flip, his deft touch amps up the funky factor of the original while still maintaining its haunting power.
