Applescal & Ryan Davis – ‘Creatures’ [EP stream]

The Berlin producers team up to release an EP of three re-imaginings, and ask for your help dreaming up a fourth.

Applescal and Ryan Davis are two Berlin-based producers who get all deep and dreamy when it comes to dance music – just check Applescal's fourth album 'Dreaming In Key', released earlier this year, for proof. He's only 22, but Applescal – aka Pascal Terstappen – has already put out four full-length releases, and this latest outing with Davis is an apt metaphor for his wider prolific attitude; unable to settle for just one idea, the EP presents three different versions of one track. Creatures is a deep, pulsating number that lulls and thrusts between nochalant daydreaming and a dancefloor-reaching surge. Alongside it are a crackling, impossibly warped "ambient mix" and a thrashing "dark edit" that take the sounds to the very limit of what they originally were.
Exploring the possibilities of reworking music on their own isn't enough for this pair, though – they're also holding a remix competition, with the promise of an analog synth from the Korg Volca series and a place on their remix EP for the winner. Get more information on how to enter that here.

Atomnation released the 'Creatures' EP on the 2nd September 2013. Applescal will be performing at Bestival from 5th – 8th September.
