Video Premiere: Escapism Refuge - Courage

Escapism Refuge needs to be on your radar. Hailing from Johannesburg, Jason Beukes fuses elements of trip-hop, downtempo and 2-step, crafting ambient electronic soundscapes. His debut album, Hold, released earlier in the month, was an infectious introduction to his talent, especially the highlight cut ‘Courage’.

Envisioned and produced by the artist himself, its trippy accompanying visuals, premiering below, demonstrate an astute proficiency in the creative arts – a talent clearly encompassing his persona, not just evident in his musicianship.

“When I was making the video, I found it very similar to making a song," he told Dummy. "This was my first attempt at making a video. There's a little wendy house in my garden that has a window. I painted a few different square patterns that matched the shape of the squares in the window on paper and captured images of painted squares in each little square of the window. I had to wait until it was dark so that there was no light. I then played around with a light on top of my head to capture the right amount of light in the images. The rest was editing.”
