The follow-up to Chicago rapper and producer Tree’s mixtape ‘Sunday School’ – one of the best of last year – is here, and it’s really good.
Tree (who is actually in the process of trademarking the “SoulTrap” tag and has also described his style as “B.B King rapping”) strips samples down to their core, has a voice that works like an out-of-tune saxophone and is very candid about his life; all of which made the first ‘Sunday School’ so beautifully nostalgic and refreshingly honest. He continues in the same vein here but is interested in building too, bringing in other producers like Bink! and guests like Danny Brown and Roc Marciano and structuring the tape around a church order of service. ‘Sunday School II: When Church Lets Out’ was premiered at The Fader and is available to stream on their site or to download here.
