18-year-old rapper tmdistant has taken his pen-game to new levels with a mouth-watering output of singles and collaborations so far this year. Following on from his dark R&B track ‘nothing new’ with German-Irish singer-songwriter vi0let, the teenager today shares his latest offering ‘mix it up’, complete with a brand new set of visuals.
Produced by upstate New York-based producer and songwriter Abare, ‘mix it up’ effortlessly blends hyperpop and electronic music with sprinkles of alternative hip hop to create a vibrant sound with mainstream appeal. The song details tmdistant’s journey to where he currently is, rising from nothing to something in the space of a year after dropping singles such as ‘go get it’ and ‘so bipolar’.
On the track, the 18-year-old says: “I wrote this song after attending a few parties after Covid restrictions had eased and people starting to enjoy going out again. This motive I went to was full of people from my childhood (high school days)— as I entered the party, it felt like everyone saw a ghost. People were greeting me like I was a celebrity— it was a surreal feeling. I felt like a superstar.
“These were the same people that used to laugh at me when I first started making music funny enough. Thus why on the intro I said ‘they never understood the plan, they just pouring a cup’. Wherever I go these days, people know me — my presence always shakes things up. That’s what made me write this song the way I did. The rest can be interpreted however the listener thinks and feels.”
Aside from the track’s infectious sound, ‘mix it up’ impresses with a fun and visually-striking music video provided by Sorin D. Visuals, which sees the Essex-based rapper tear it up at a house party with his friends.
